The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that what most people would like to improve about their smile is the shade of their teeth. Teeth whitening products include whitening toothpastes; over-the-counter gels, strips, and trays; and in-office whitening treatment.
Dr. Gourley, Dr. Juson, and our team stress the importance of avoiding certain foods and beverages when you’re whitening your teeth. A general rule to follow is: if a food would stain white linen, it will also stain your teeth. This is especially the case when your teeth are in the vulnerable transition of being whitened. There are three main types of food and beverages that you should avoid during the teeth whitening process.
Acidic Foods & Drinks
Teeth whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Because of this, acidic foods can cause further irritation to the gums and increase tooth sensitivity. For about 48 hours after in-office teeth whitening or a few hours after at-home teeth whitening, avoid the following:
– Acidic foods, like citrus fruit
– Vitamin water
– Sports drinks
Foods with Color
Foods with color can stain your pearly whites. Some examples include:
– Tomato Sauce
– Red Meat
– Chocolate (white chocolate is OK)
– Nacho chips
Dark Drinks & Sports Drinks
Clear and light beverages are fine, but avoid the following:
– Tomato Juice
– Carrot Juice
